Rural Insurance
Rural insurance is a family of covers built for rural livelihoods — crops, cattle and livestock, tractors and farm equipment, pump sets and rural dwellings. Premiums are low, sums insured are modest and claims are kept document-light, because the point is to keep a household or an agri-business standing after a bad season or a single lost animal. Assurmate helps you pick the right combination across 75+ insurance partners, including government-backed schemes.
What it is
Rural insurance is not one policy but a group of them, each written for a specific rural asset. Crop cover, often under a government-supported scheme, pays when yield falls short because of drought, flood, pest or unseasonal rain. Cattle and livestock policies pay an agreed value if an insured animal dies from disease or accident, with identification by ear tag or photograph. Tractor and farm equipment policies work like motor and machinery cover. Pump set policies cover burnout and mechanical failure of the motor. Rural dwelling policies cover the house, shed and contents against fire, storm and flood.
Because these are small-ticket policies, insurers keep the paperwork short and settle on standard evidence — a veterinary certificate, a photograph with the ear tag, a surveyor visit — rather than the documentation load of a commercial claim.
Who needs it
Farmers and farming households, dairy and poultry owners, agri-input dealers, tractor and equipment owners, self-help groups and rural households all benefit from cover sized to their assets. Cattle cover in particular is often the single most valuable protection a dairy household can buy — one lost buffalo can equal a year's savings.
It is equally relevant to agri-businesses: seed and input suppliers, cold-storage operators and rural finance institutions frequently require insurance on the assets they finance or store. We help match the cover to what the lender or scheme actually requires, so the policy does its job on paper as well as in practice.
What's covered
- Crop loss from drought, flood, pest and unseasonal rain, under scheme-based policies
- Death of insured cattle and livestock from disease or accident
- Tractors, harvesters and farm equipment — accident, fire and theft
- Pump set burnout and mechanical or electrical breakdown
- Rural dwellings and sheds against fire, storm, flood and lightning
- Personal accident cover for the insured and family, where added
Typically not covered
- Animals without a valid ear tag or identification at the time of loss
- Death from pre-existing disease or within the policy waiting period
- Wilful neglect, intentional slaughter and loss during unauthorised transport
- Crop loss outside the notified area, season or insured crop under scheme rules
- Wear and tear, gradual deterioration and ordinary mechanical wear on equipment
- Consequential losses such as lost milk yield or lost income
Why buy it through Assurmate
The right scheme, not just a policy
Some rural risks are best covered by government-supported schemes and others by a plain commercial policy. We tell you which is which before you pay.
Sums insured that actually match the asset
Under-insuring cattle or equipment is the usual reason a payout disappoints. We set values against real replacement cost.
Claims handled locally
We help arrange the veterinary certificate, tag evidence or surveyor visit, and follow the file until the money reaches the account.
Bundled cover, one renewal
Crop, cattle, tractor and dwelling covers can run on one calendar so nothing quietly lapses.
Affordable premiums
These are low-ticket policies by design, and scheme-based crop cover carries a subsidised premium share.
Advice in plain language
We explain waiting periods, tagging rules and scheme deadlines up front, because those are what decide a claim.
Optional add-ons
- Personal accident cover for the household. Low-cost accident cover for the insured and family members alongside the asset policy.
- Extended cattle cover — permanent total disablement. Pays where an animal survives but can no longer be productive, subject to veterinary certification.
- Farm equipment and implement cover. Extends tractor cover to trailers, rotavators and attached implements.
- Rural dwelling contents cover. Adds household goods and stored produce to the structure cover.

Rural Insurance questions
The things people ask us most about this cover.
Usually yes, because the premium is a small fraction of the animal's value and the loss of even one animal is a large hit to a small dairy household. The key requirement is proper identification — an ear tag or the insurer's approved identification at the time of the policy and at claim.
Crop cover is usually scheme-based and tied to a notified area, notified crop and a seasonal cut-off date, with the premium partly subsidised. Payouts are triggered by yield data or weather indices rather than an individual survey of your field.
A tractor used on public roads needs motor insurance like any other vehicle. Where it is used only within the farm, cover can be arranged on a different basis. We check the registration and use before advising.
Identification and timing. For livestock it is a missing or mismatched ear tag; for crops it is enrolling after the cut-off date or for a crop not notified in that area. Both are avoidable if handled at the time of purchase.
They are separate policies, but we can align the renewal dates and hold both under one file so you deal with one point of contact and one calendar.
