Goods Carrying Vehicle (GCV) Insurance
Goods carrying vehicle (GCV) insurance covers trucks, tempos, Boleros, tippers and every vehicle that moves goods for a living, against accident damage, fire, theft and third-party liability. Third-party cover is compulsory; comprehensive cover protects the vehicle itself. The cargo inside is a separate marine transit policy, which we usually arrange alongside so there is no gap between the two.
What it is
A GCV policy is a commercial motor contract rated on gross vehicle weight, vehicle age, registration zone and route. The compulsory third-party section pays for injury, death or property damage caused to others, with no monetary cap on injury and death awards made by a Motor Accident Claims Tribunal. The own-damage section covers accident, fire, theft, riot and natural calamities up to the Insured Declared Value.
Because goods vehicles run long distances and are often driven by employed drivers, two endorsements matter more here than elsewhere: legal liability to paid driver and cleaner, and a correctly declared area of operation. A national-permit truck insured for restricted use is a claim dispute waiting to happen.
Who needs it
Transporters and fleet owners, distributors and traders running their own delivery vehicles, contractors moving material to site, and single-truck owner-operators all need GCV cover. So does any business that has quietly started using a pickup or tempo for deliveries — a private policy will not respond once the vehicle is used commercially.
The economics are unforgiving: a truck off the road earns nothing while EMIs and driver wages continue. That is why we treat claim turnaround and cashless garage access as the main selection criteria, with premium a close second.
What's covered
- Third-party injury, death and property damage — legally compulsory
- Own damage from accident, collision and overturning
- Fire, explosion, self-ignition and lightning
- Theft, burglary and housebreaking of the vehicle
- Natural calamities — flood, cyclone, earthquake and landslide
- Riot, strike, malicious damage and terrorism
- Compulsory Personal Accident cover for the owner-driver
Typically not covered
- The goods being carried — these need a marine cargo or goods-in-transit policy
- Driving without a valid commercial licence, permit or fitness certificate
- Operating outside the declared route or geographical area
- Overloading beyond the registered laden weight, where it caused the loss
- Wear and tear, depreciation, tyre damage and mechanical breakdown
- Consequential loss such as loss of hire while the vehicle is repaired
Why buy it through Assurmate
Vehicle and cargo covered together
We pair the motor policy with a marine transit policy so a single loss does not fall between two insurers.
Priced against the whole market
GCV own-damage rates vary widely by weight class and zone. We test 75+ insurance partners rather than accepting the renewal notice.
Route and permit checked
Declared area of operation is a common reason claims are contested. We make sure the policy matches how the vehicle actually runs.
Driver and cleaner liability added
Legal liability to paid driver and cleaner is an endorsement, not a default. We make sure it is on the policy.
Turnaround treated as the priority
We chase surveyor allotment, approval and cashless repair so the truck returns to the road quickly.
Fleet-ready administration
As vehicles are added or sold, we handle endorsements and keep one renewal calendar for the whole fleet.
Optional add-ons
- Legal liability to paid driver and cleaner. Covers your statutory liability to the crew employed on the vehicle.
- Zero depreciation. Removes depreciation deduction on replaced parts, worthwhile on newer vehicles.
- Roadside assistance and towing. Breakdown and towing support on highways and long-haul routes.
- Marine cargo / goods-in-transit cover. A separate policy covering the goods themselves, arranged alongside as single-transit or annual open cover.

Goods Carrying Vehicle (GCV) Insurance questions
The things people ask us most about this cover.
No. A goods carrying vehicle policy covers the vehicle and your third-party liability. The cargo itself is covered by a marine cargo or goods-in-transit policy, which can be written as single transit or as annual open cover for regular movements.
Yes. Commercial use of a privately registered and privately insured vehicle gives the insurer grounds to reject an own-damage claim. The registration and the policy both need to reflect commercial use.
Carrying more than the registered laden weight breaches the policy conditions. If the insurer establishes that overloading contributed to the accident, the own-damage claim can be rejected.
Cover follows the geographical area declared in the policy. If the vehicle runs on a national permit, the policy must reflect that — otherwise a claim outside the declared area can be contested.
Yes. Once you run several vehicles, a fleet arrangement consolidates renewals, endorsements and claims and often improves pricing. We can quote both ways and show the difference.
