Commercial Vehicle Insurance

Commercial vehicle insurance covers any vehicle you use to earn — a pickup, van, tempo, tipper, tanker or specialised vehicle — against accident damage, theft, fire and third-party liability. Third-party cover is compulsory under the Motor Vehicles Act, and a comprehensive policy adds own-damage protection so a single accident does not park your business. Buying through Assurmate means we compare commercial motor rates across 75+ insurance partners and handle the claim when a vehicle is off the road.

What it is

A commercial vehicle policy is an annual motor contract written for vehicles registered for commercial use. It has two halves. The third-party section, which the law makes compulsory, pays for injury, death or property damage you cause to someone else — there is no cap on injury and death awards decided by the Motor Accident Claims Tribunal. The own-damage section pays to repair or replace your own vehicle after an accident, fire, riot, flood or theft, up to the Insured Declared Value agreed at the start of the year.

Premiums are driven by the vehicle's gross vehicle weight, cubic capacity, age, registration zone and the kind of work it does, because a tipper on a mine road and a van doing city deliveries carry very different risk. A compulsory Personal Accident cover for the owner-driver and optional legal liability cover for paid drivers, cleaners and attendants sit alongside the main policy.

Who needs it

Any business or individual running a vehicle for hire, reward or business use needs this cover rather than a private car policy — insurers will decline an own-damage claim if a privately insured vehicle was being used commercially. That includes traders and distributors running pickups and tempos, construction firms with tippers and transit mixers, contractors with tankers and specialised vehicles, and owner-operators who drive their own vehicle for a living.

It matters most for businesses where one vehicle is one earning unit. Downtime is the real loss: the repair bill is finite, but a vehicle off the road for six weeks silently cancels six weeks of revenue, which is why claim speed matters more than a small premium difference.

What's covered

  • Third-party injury, death and property damage — the legally compulsory section
  • Own damage from accident, collision and overturning
  • Fire, explosion, self-ignition and lightning
  • Theft, burglary and housebreaking of the vehicle
  • Natural calamities — flood, cyclone, earthquake and landslide
  • Riot, strike, malicious damage and terrorism
  • Compulsory Personal Accident cover for the owner-driver

Typically not covered

  • Driving without a valid commercial licence or a valid permit and fitness certificate
  • Use outside the permitted geographical area or the purpose declared in the policy
  • Normal wear and tear, depreciation and mechanical or electrical breakdown
  • Damage while the driver is under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • Consequential loss, including loss of earnings while the vehicle is off the road
  • Overloading beyond the registered laden weight, where the insurer proves it caused the loss

Why buy it through Assurmate

Rates compared across insurers

Commercial motor pricing varies widely between insurers by vehicle class and zone. We put your schedule in front of 75+ insurance partners rather than renewing on autopilot.

Downtime treated as the real loss

We push for quick surveyor allotment and cashless repair so the vehicle is earning again, instead of arguing over a few thousand rupees of depreciation.

Correct IDV, not a cheap one

An artificially low Insured Declared Value cuts the premium and guts the total-loss payout. We set the IDV to what the vehicle is actually worth.

Paperwork checked before the claim

Permit, fitness, licence class and route — we check these at renewal, because these are exactly what an insurer questions at claim time.

One point of contact for a growing fleet

As you add vehicles, we keep endorsements, renewals and claims under a single relationship instead of scattered policies.

Claims support that follows through

We coordinate the surveyor, garage and insurer until settlement, and escalate when a file stalls.

Optional add-ons

  • Legal liability to paid driver, cleaner and attendant. Covers your statutory liability to employees travelling on the vehicle — essential the moment you employ a driver.
  • Zero depreciation. Pays the full cost of replaced plastic, rubber and fibre parts without deducting depreciation, on newer vehicles.
  • Roadside assistance and towing. Breakdown help and towing on highways, which matters most for vehicles that operate far from base.
  • Personal Accident cover for occupants. Extends accident cover to people carried in the vehicle beyond the owner-driver.

FAQ

Commercial Vehicle Insurance questions

The things people ask us most about this cover.

No. If a vehicle registered or used for commercial purposes is insured as a private vehicle, the insurer can repudiate an own-damage claim and dispute liability. The policy must match the vehicle's registration and actual use.

It is the legal minimum, and it protects you against third-party awards, which can be very large. It pays nothing towards your own vehicle. For any vehicle you cannot afford to replace out of pocket, comprehensive cover is the sensible choice.

No. A motor policy covers the vehicle and third-party liability, not the cargo. Goods in transit are covered by a marine cargo policy, which we usually arrange alongside.

Driving without a valid, correct-class licence is a standard exclusion and gives the insurer grounds to reject the own-damage claim. Keeping licence classes, permits and fitness certificates current is the single cheapest risk control you have.

Third-party premium is set by IRDAI each year by vehicle class and cubic capacity or gross vehicle weight. Own-damage premium is priced by the insurer on IDV, vehicle age, zone, usage and claim history — which is why comparing insurers is worth it.
